This research project starts from the strategic objective of a livable Milan at a human scale: the question was focused on how to make a more beautiful and livable city concretely possible by investing in its redevelopment, by bringing public space back into the game as a place where relationships are established, and new kinds of services delivered.

In this sense, the squares, the streets, the sidewalks, the subway exits, all the often abandoned and degraded connective tissues, real grey areas, have been explored and analyzed. They were the subject of a study, also of feasibility, in which different micro-infrastructures were put in the centre of a widespread planning in which a new image of the city was designed, in which citizens can live and work supported by beauty, order, decorum and in safety.

Contrary to common belief, in fact, large scale interventions, and especially those intended for the transformation of significant portions of the city, have not to be necessarily big in size, but can rather consist of well-designed systems, which are small in size, but widespread in extension, which fuse low tech as well as high tech. These new types of interventions can play a virtuous and decisive role for the improvement of the quality standards of life, the environment as well as for an overall development, with relevant economic and productive repercussions today.

In the different proposals of the project Widespread the scale and complexity of landscape and a specific selection of its tools and protocols encounters selected interstitial urban and peri urban spaces, a reinterpretation of radical architecture and new emerging technologies. Concrete physical interventions as well as urban service systems are devised and experimentally applied to the city of Milan. From this area of research different experimental applications have developed, which experimentally verify the physical inevitability of often invisible regimes.
